Historically Waterford was an important trading port which brought much prosperity to the city throughout the city’s eventful history. In April 2003, a site combining a fifth-century Iron Age and ninth-century Viking settlement was discovered at Woodstown near the city, which appears to have been a Viking town that predates all such settlements in Ireland.
